From this summer, customers at one major Dutch bank will no longer be required to use their debit card in order to withdraw money at a cash machine. Instead, by adjusting their preferences in the ING app, the bank’s customers will be able to take cash out with just a transaction code. 

ING introducing new system for customers in the Netherlands 

The world of banking has changed dramatically over the past few years, thanks to technological advancements like Apple Pay and Tikkie. Now, in an effort to move with the times, ING has announced imminent changes to the way customers can withdraw money.

Starting this summer, customers will be able to adjust their personal settings via the ING app on their smartphones, allowing them to use a transaction code - and not their bank card - to withdraw up to 100 euros at ATMs. ING believes the policy change will be “useful for customers who don't have their debit card with them or have lost it."

It's not entirely clear when this new policy will come into effect, although a spokesperson for ING told NU that the bank intends to update its terms and conditions from July 1. Currently, customers are only able to request a so-called transaction code by visiting one of the bank’s branches in the Netherlands.

ING isn’t the only bank that’s made changes to how customers can access their cash. Since 2021, those who bank with ABN AMRO have been able to withdraw up to 500 euros from cash machines using QR codes on mobile phones
