Record-breaking 157 million Tikkies sent in the Netherlands in 2024

Record-breaking 157 million Tikkies sent in the Netherlands in 2024

The Netherlands has broken yet another record with 5,3 Tikkies paid per second in 2024. According to figures revealed by ABN AMRO, the payment request app saw 157 million transactions take place totalling 7,4 billion euros.

Most popular payment requests on Tikkie are food-related

The Dutch bank noted that the three most common reasons for sending Tikkies were to settle bills for food, groceries and lunch. Additionally, 2024 also saw a rise in payment requests for padel, an increasingly popular sport in the Netherlands

The average value of a Tikkie rose to 47,28 euros last year, but there were also more than one million Tikkies of less than 1 euro sent across the country. Many of these transactions occurred on King’s Day for meals, drinks and unsurprisingly the use of toilets.

The new Groepie function on the mobile app, which allows users to keep track of joint expenses, grew in popularity, especially for winter sports holidays in Antwerp, Valencia, Paris and Berlin. Having statiegeld (recycling deposit money) paid out directly into their bank accounts via Tikkie was also quite popular in the past year.

More than half of Tikkies in the Netherlands paid within an hour

The Dutch don’t like holding on to debt or owing anyone money, and the speed with which people pay their Tikkies proves that: 89 percent of Tikkies sent by the 10 million app users last year were paid within 24 hours and 64 percent were settled within just one hour.

If you think that’s fast, you’ll be amazed to hear that 38 percent were paid within five minutes and 22 percent within a very speedy one minute.
