As a Researcher in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Wageningen Marine Research, you will play a pivotal role in advancing our projects in the marine domain. We envision that you harness the power of AI, specifically in computer vision applications, as well as sensor technology to enhance fisheries, aquaculture and ecological research. Your work at Wageningen Marine Research will contribute to cutting-edge solutions. You will be optimizing data acquisition and analysis, and you will help foster innovation in marine science. Through recent technological advancements Wageningen Marine Research can now enhance monitoring campaigns on increasingly larger (temporal and spatial) scales, using a broad variety of sensors such as various optical and acoustic sensors, radars and remotely operated or autonomous carrying platforms, e.g. (underwater) drones. As an applied research institute, one of our roles is to translate raw collected data (i.e., field data) into scientific data and useful information for marine resource managers and policymakers. To support this translation and take the next step, we are looking for an AI Researcher who will join our Marine Vision and Robotics team.

In this role:

  • You will work on several projects focusing on a range of fields within the marine science domain, such as fisheries, aquaculture and ecology;
  • Your work will contribute to cutting-edge solutions, optimizing data acquisition and analysis, and fostering innovation in marine science;
  • You enjoy working on topics related to the marine environment, developing real-life solutions and you thrive in multidisciplinary environments;
  • You are part of the WUR-wide Vision and Robotics (V+R) team;
  • You collaborate in multi-disciplinary research projects;
  • You are involved in the entire project lifecycle, from the initial project idea to client meetings, discussions with the project team, various research phases within the project, to the delivery of final results;
  • You work on multiple projects simultaneously as part of a contract research registration;

Wageningen Marine Research (WMR) is a leading research institute employing approximately 190 people. We do our work from three locations: IJmuiden, Den Helder and Yerseke. Requirements:

An enthusiastic and ambitious AI researcher/engineer with:

  • A university degree in engineering (e.g. electrical, mechatronics, software, biosystems, aquatic technology, computer science). A Ph.D. is a plus but not required;
  • Demonstrated skills in computer vision applications;
  • Experience and skills in sensor technology, preferably applications in the field;
  • Experience with design and building hardware is a plus;
  • Personal interest in topics related to marine domain is an advantage;
  • Strong programming skills and experience with Python are required; experience with other programming languages is a plus;
  • You are flexible and enthusiastic about finding solutions, and skilled in working collaboratively to ensure project success;
  • A social and creative personality;
  • Good proficiency in English. In our international working environment, communication in English is common. This position requires at least language level C1, and preferably C2. Dutch is a plus but not required;
  • Willingness to travel: the work will be conducted at various WUR locations, including Yerseke, Den Helder, IJmuiden, and Wageningen. International travel for conferences and meetings will also be part of this role.

We offer, depending on your experience, a competitive gross salary of between € 3.234,- and € 5.273,- for a full-time working week of 36 hours, in accordance with the CLA Wageningen Research (Hay profile WO Researcher 4/scale 10).
