The Netherlands has faced days of cloudy skies and rain, and this week isn’t going to bring anything different. In fact, meteorologists have warned that the weather over the coming days will provide the country with what is likely to be the wettest week of the summer.

August 2023 kicks off with rainy and grey weather

August may have arrived in the Netherlands, but you’d be forgiven for thinking summer was already over, based on the weather the country has seen recently. July brought an unseasonable amount of rain, and August - or at least the beginning of August - is looking fairly similar, with Buienradar meteorologist Reinier van den Berg labelling this week the “wettest week of the summer” on social media:

Every day this week is set to bring temperatures of around 20 degrees and between 5 and 10 millilitres of rain, if not more. There might be some bursts of sunshine, but these will be few and far between - you’ll definitely be needing your waterproofs and not your sunglasses when commuting to work or school. 

The Netherlands could see warmer weather from August 10

While the Dutch Weather Institute (KNMI) had initially issued a code yellow weather warning for much of the Netherlands on August 1, those warnings have luckily been lifted - although areas in the north and east of the country could still see thunder and hail on Tuesday. Temperatures range from 19 degrees in Groningen to 21 degrees in Maastricht and Eindhoven.

Wednesday is likely to be the wettest day of the week, RTL Nieuws reports, bringing up to 20 millilitres of rain, while Thursday could bring more thunderstorms to the country. Looking ahead, the autumnal weather is set to last throughout the weekend, when temperatures won't reach higher than 18 or 19 degrees - not great news for Pride Amsterdam.

According to Buienradar, these cool and rainy conditions will last for up to 10 days, with warmer, sunnier and dryer temperatures currently forecasted to return from August 10 at the earliest.
