New Year’s weather in the Netherlands to be very windy with high chance of rain
For many in the Netherlands, outdoor activities during New Year’s celebrations will be dampened by windy and rainy weather as the country welcomes 2025. A code yellow weather warning has been issued for parts of the country as strong wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour are predicted.
Strong winds to affect Dutch New Year’s Eve celebrations
The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has issued a code yellow weather warning for the whole of Noord-Holland, the Wadden Islands and the Wadden Sea from 11pm on December 31 until 8am on January 1, 2025. Gusts of 75 to 90 kilometres per hour are expected in the northwestern parts of the country, while the rest of the Netherlands could also experience heavy winds.
The strong gusts of wind are expected to hit the Netherlands on New Year’s Eve, building strength as the day progresses, possibly hindering fireworks shows and other outdoor activities such as the New Year's Dive that have been planned and continuing into the first day of the New Year. Rain is also possible now and then throughout the last day of 2024.
Dreary Dutch weather forecast for first day of 2025
With mild temperatures of between 8 and 10 degrees celsius across the country, persistent strong winds and heavy rain, New Year’s Day is expected to be a dreary Wednesday in the Netherlands, according to Weeronline.
As we go further into 2025, the weather improves slightly. On Thursday, the wind will calm down and the sun will shine periodically. However, there will still be a few showers and colder air will be blown in, bringing temperatures down to a maximum of 6 degrees celsius. As the weekend approaches, temperatures will drop even further with the chance of frost at nighttime.
