Heavy rain and thunderstorms are set to hit the Netherlands on Wednesday, with the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) having issued a code yellow weather warning for most of the country.

Weather warning for heavy rain on September 11 in the Netherlands 

Last week saw warm temperatures and mostly sunny days, while this week has seen wet and chilly autumn weather make an appearance. The KNMI has issued a code yellow warning for almost the whole of the Netherlands, with Limburg being the only exception.

From 10am on Wednesday, September 11 to 12am on Thursday, September 12, a weather warning is in place for heavy rain, thunderstorms and an increased risk of flooding. In the morning, thunderstorms will sweep over the northern half of the country and will spread across the rest of the country from late in the afternoon. There will also be strong gusts of wind, which can cause nuisance for transport and events taking place outdoors, and hail is even a possibility. 

Rainy weather in the Netherlands to continue in following days

While the warning will be lifted at the end of Wednesday, the rainy weather will continue into Thursday, especially in the western parts of the Netherlands. According to Weeronline.nl, rain showers will move inland during the afternoon, with the chance of some sunshine peaking through to raise temperatures to a maximum of 15 degrees celsius.

A slightly warmer Friday will still see some showers, interspersed with more dry and sunny periods with predicted temperatures of 16 degrees. Slowly the rain clouds will disperse to reveal a weekend that is mostly dry and sunny.
