New ranking considers the UvA the best Dutch university
The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is the highest ranked Dutch university in the latest edition of Britain's QS World University Rankings. In total, four Dutch universities made it into this year's top 100.
The UvA comes in at the 62nd position, up one spot from last year. The University of Leiden came next and showed the biggest jump in the ranking, from 88th to 75th place.
After that, Utrecht University followed in 85th place and the Erasmus University of Rotterdam (EUR) ranked 99th. TU Delft (103rd), Maastricht University (107th) and the University of Groningen (109th) just missed the top 100.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Cambridge, and Harvard University are the top 3 universities in the world according to the QS ranking.

In the rankings by subject, Social Sciences & Management and Arts & Humanities at the UvA are in the global top 50, in 41st and 43rd place respectively. Natural Sciences is ranked 75th and Life Sciences & Medicine are in 69th place. When it comes to Engineering & Technology, the UvA is somewhat weaker, coming in at 213rd place.
In the rankings by subject, Social Sciences & Management and Arts & Humanities at the UvA are in the global top 50, in 41st and 43rd place respectively. Natural Sciences is ranked 75th and Life Sciences & Medicine are in 69th place. When it comes to Engineering & Technology, the UvA is somewhat weaker, coming in at 213rd place.
The QS World University Rankings are decided based on academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), citations (20%), the ratio of staff to students (20%), the number of international academic staff (5%) and the number international students (5%).
The QS Rankings differ considerably from the Academic Ranking of World Universities (also known as Shanghai) announced in August, which considered Utrecht University the best the Netherlands has to offer.
