You will be working on a sub-project of a larger project titled Non-standard Work: the Role of the EU and the Experiences and Interests of the Workers, funded by Instituut Gak, with Prof. Dr. Maarten Keune as project leader. This position offers a unique opportunity to delve into the motives the EU has to play a role in strengthening the position of non-standard, precarious workers, and to evaluate how successful this role is. You will do research on two questions. One concerns the ways in which recent EU social and employment regulation has been legitimized, focusing on the European Pillar of Social Rights and a series of regulations stemming therefrom. The other concerns the effects of these EU regulations on social and employment regulations and outcomes in the Netherlands. The work will largely be based on interviews and document analysis.
What you will do
You will work in close cooperation with prof. Keune and Mr. Dr. Nuna Zekić. The project team further includes Dr. Wieteke Conen and a PhD researcher (to be hired). You will be placed at the interdisciplinary research institute AIAS-HSI, at the University of Amsterdam and participate in the vibrant academic life of our University.
Your tasks as a Postdoctoral researcher will include the following:
- Analysis documents related to the emergence, content and justification of the European Pillar of Social Rights and a selection of recent Directives and Recommendations;
- Interviews with officials of the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European social partners and experts;
- Analysis of the documentation related to the transposition and implementation of recent EU regulations in the Netherlands and interviews with Dutch ministry officials, Members of Parliament, social partners and experts;
- Writing short project reports;
- Publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals;
- Participation in meetings of the project research group;
- Presenting papers at national and international conferences and workshops;
- Participating in the intellectual life and contribute to the research profile of AIAS-HSI;
- Contributing to the organization of the events and outreach activities within the project.
What we expect from you
- A PhD degree in one of the social sciences, such as sociology, political science or law, preferably on a topic related to EU social and employment regulation;
- experience in independently conducting research, with proven track record of academic publications and/ or (public) outreach;
- proven qualitative methodological skills;
- good skills working in teams and willingness to support the PhD student working on the project;
- full professional working proficiency in English (speaking, writing, reading) and working knowledge of Dutch.

We offer a 1.0 fte position (38 hours/week) as Postdoctoral Researcher. The initial appointment is for 1 year. Following a positive assessment your appointment will be extended for another 1 year and 4 months to a total length of 2 years and 4 months. The start date will be mutually agreed upon; it is currently scheduled around 1 September 2025. Your salary, depending on your relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between €3.378 to €5.331 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8.3% year-end allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU) is applicable.
Your workplace
You will work at research centre AIAS-HSI, affiliated to the Amsterdam Law School. AIAS-HSI has the most interdisciplinary group of scientists in the field of work, the labour market and industrial relations in the Netherlands. There is a scientific staff of approximately 13 FTE, divided over 19 employees with different disciplinary backgrounds, including lawyers, economists, sociologists and political scientists.
