Tony Kushner’s Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes has been a landmark in contemporary theatre since its 1991 premiere. Award-winning and adapted into an HBO series, it remains a powerful exploration of identity, politics, and the human spirit.
Ivo van Hove’s 2008 radical production - Kushner’s personal favourite - earned Hans Kesting the Louis d'Or for his portrayal of Roy Cohn. Now, this minimalist adaptation returns, blending original cast members with new talent, set against a soundtrack of David Bowie’s music. It is a tribute to resilience, transformation, and survival.
Set in Reagan-era America, Angels in America follows ex-drag queen Prior and conservative lawyer Roy Cohn as they navigate the AIDS crisis. In part 1, Millennium Approaches, lives are upended as disease and death challenge personal and political beliefs. Part 2, Perestroika, sees new relationships form as the characters struggle with change.
Through a whirlwind of tragicomic encounters, Kushner examines identity as an ever-evolving process shaped by human connection. Angels in America is a gripping, humorous, and deeply moving story of love, change, and the power of imagination - not just as an escape but as a path to understanding.

Every Thursday, the ITA-ensemble performances (in Dutch) are surtitled in English. Surtitles are like subtitles, but are shown above the stage, so non-Dutch speaking attendees won't miss a beat!
