The Netherlands ranked as the 9th wealthiest country in the world

The Netherlands ranked as the 9th wealthiest country in the world

The Netherlands has been ranked as the ninth richest country in the world by gross financial assets (in euros). The annual report by Allianz, the insurance provider, placed the Netherlands among the top 10 wealthiest countries in the world.

2022 was a difficult year for savers, says Allianz

As people who have a bank account in the Netherlands will already know, 2022 was a difficult year for savers. Allianz referred to the year as an “Annus Horribilis” - a horrible year - for those looking to save their money in return for interest. The report detailed the steep decline that households’ financial assets have faced in the past 12 months, and stated that the fall is the worst seen since the 2008 financial crisis.

The report also found that people invest differently depending on the region in which they live - with Chinese investors favouring so-called wealth-management products, while US investors have a preference for stocks and mutual funds. Investors across the globe have also increasingly turned their backs on banks since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and are saving less than when opportunities to spend money on holidays, homes, trips, food and other economic activities were vastly limited during lockdown periods.

The Netherlands remains one of the wealthiest countries in the world

The Netherlands is generally considered to be one of the wealthiest countries on earth, though Allianz considers the country to be in exactly ninth place with average gross financial assets of 156.920 euros per capita. The country sits behind the likes of Switzerland, the United States and Denmark, but ahead of New Zealand.

Interestingly, the report acknowledges that though many European countries previously dominated the top 10 of the ranking, there are more countries from outside the continent making the top 10. Among these are Singapore and Taiwan.
