NS announces reduced timetable, fewer trains running overnight
On Monday, Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) announced they were temporarily cutting the number of trains that run overnight as a result of reduced passenger numbers and coronavirus restrictions.
Reduced passenger numbers on Dutch trains
The current national lockdown has had significant consequences for public transport in the Netherlands, and with some restrictions and rules set to remain in place for the foreseeable future, NS has confirmed they are once again adjusting their timetable in order to compensate for reduced passenger numbers.
As of 6.30pm on Monday, January 10, NS has cut the number of trains running throughout the night between various Dutch cities.
NS cuts services between Rotterdam, Schiphol and Amsterdam
Between Eindhoven, Den Bosch, and Tilburg, no trains will run after 6.30pm on the weekends. Meanwhile, key connections between Amersfoort, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Arnhem, The Hague, and Schiphol Airport are now running on reduced capacity. NS has not said when they hope to scale their services back up.
In addition to this, NS has decided to run fewer trains during rush hour, as the Dutch government continues to advise everyone working in the Netherlands to work from home as much as possible. Some routes that have seen rushhour services cut include Rotterdam to Gouda, Amsterdam to Enkhuizen, Utrecht to Houten, and Den Helder to Alkmaar.
