Mahler’s symphonies are very autobiographical, full of glimpses into his marital problems, his love of nature, and his anger and doubts. The ninth may arguably be the most autobiographical of them all. Every second of his last completed symphony gives the impression of being a personal drama, with moments of frenzy and absolute despair.

Symphony No. 9 is also brimming with special sound effects. Mahler had always been a brilliant orchestrator, but in this work, he manages to outdo even himself.
