Amity International School Amsterdam is an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme Candidate School*. At Amity, students are encouraged to think critically and independently and to inquire into issues of global and local significance. Part of Amity’s mission is to create authentic learning experiences which bring the curriculum to life.
The green parks surrounding the school (the Amsterdam forest is within walking distance of the school) provide great opportunities for the students to discover the world around them. It is the ideal setting for students to learn with enthusiasm and to develop and sustain their love of learning throughout life. Amy Wright, the school’s Head of Primary and PYP Coordinator explains:
“The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is committed to enhancing students’ social and emotional, as well as their cognitive well-being. Like all IB programmes, the PYP addresses student well-being through the IB Learner Profile, which aspires to develop balanced and caring learners.”
Swimming lessons
Being able to develop lifelong skills such as swimming is something the school feels is incredibly important. All of Amity’s students from Early Years 2 (age 4) up until the Middle Years attend swimming lessons on a weekly basis throughout the year. But it’s not just the swimming lessons that set Amity apart. Amy Wright:
“The curriculum at Amity International School is based on the principle that children’s best learning happens when they are engaged and emotionally involved in their education, when it is meaningful to them and relates to the world around them. Staff at Amity know that in order to be successful learners, students need to care about what they are learning and feel cared for by the people teaching them.”
The well-being of Amity’s students is of the utmost importance
Healthy environment
To ensure that the children’s health and development is cared for, Amity’s School Nurse works closely with the Youth Health Care of the municipality of Amstelveen to support families with regular health check-ups and vaccinations.
Moreover, she collaborates regularly with the teachers at Amity to develop students' understanding of health and well-being and provides learning activities such as yoga, mindfulness and lessons on health and the human body.
School Nurse Nanuk Jäeger confirms that it is great to be part of a school community where the health and well-being of everyone in that community is valued and learning about a healthy lifestyle is an integral part of the curriculum.
