An impressive Britten and Beethoven programme

Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14 is one of his best-known quartets. The ensemble brings the version for chamber orchestra with full-sounding brilliance.

Britten's Simple Symphony was written in his youth: four little pieces composed between the age of 10 and 13 are expertly turned into a full-bodied work for chamber orchestra. In Britten's Phaedra, the Finnish mezzo-soprano Virpi Räisänen joins the orchestra in a spectacular performance, with costumes and staging directed by Monique Wagemakers.

The concert ends with Beethoven String Quartet no. 14 arranged for string orchestra. Beethoven's late string quartets are one of the highlights in the history of chamber music, and this quartet is the most famous of its kind.
