About the production

David Dawson’s choreography breathes fresh energy into this age-old tale. In this acclaimed production, the narrative of the story is abstract, conveyed in an elegant, expressive and poetic manner. Emotions range from love, romance and joy to destruction, death and tragedy, all danced with stunning expression and flair.

Dawson’s vision of creating a brand-new version of Tristan and Isolde led him to commission a brand new musical score. The collaboration between David Dawson and composer Szymon Brzoska proved to be a fruitfully creative one, resulting in a masterpiece to die for.

The sets are by Eno Henze, who created a timeless stage set that could be taking place anywhere in the world and in any era. The lighting design is by Bert Dalhuysen and the costumes are by Yumiko Takeshima.

About Tristan + Isolde

Tristan + Isolde is a medieval romance story that has been told down through the centuries, always managing to capture the imagination and tug at heartstrings. In this love story, the young lovers are doomed to tragedy, dying in the quest for their forbidden love.

The opera of the same name by Richard Wagner, one of the most ground-breaking operas in history, hailed supreme at the Dutch National Opera earlier this year.
