Why take the annual expat survey?

Here is why this survey is so important:

1. Make your voice heard on important expat issues

While expat life can be an amazing experience, it comes with distinct challenges. Currently, there is little data on expat opinions or behaviours (the US government does not even track the number of Americans living abroad). Gathering your responses will shed light on important issues facing US expats and brings these issues to the attention of the media, politicians, businesses that serve expats, and the American public. The results of this survey can lead to real change and make life better for all expats.

The results of this year’s survey will convey expats' thoughts on key topics with the media, advocacy groups, and the expat community. This year’s survey asks expats about the effects of tax filing requirements, FATCA, FBAR, citizenship renunciation, recent tax reform, and more.

2. Expat opinions impact real change

Expat causes have a history of gaining traction in the US political and legal scene. In 2018, Congressman George Holding introduced a bill called the Tax Fairness for Americans Abroad Act that proposed to exempt foreign income from US taxation. In 2019, a group of “accidental Americans” (someone who US law deems to be American citizen, but who only has a tenuous connection with the country) living in France brought a lawsuit challenging the discriminatory policies of FATCA. In 2020, record numbers of Americans gave up their US citizenship.

3. You could be one of four winners to receive a 1.000 USD Hotels.com gift card

As a thank you for taking this year’s 5-minute expat survey, you’ll be entered to win a Hotels.com gift card woth 1.000 USD. Make sure to share the survey with your expat friends, so they will have a chance to win as well!

When expats speak up, the world listens. Take the 5-minute survey to make your voice heard!

Survey questions and methodology

From April to May 2023, Greenback Expat Tax Services will survey thousands of US expats living and working around the globe with various incomes and professions.

Survey questions will collect data in key areas of expat life and finances, including:

  • Filing US taxes
  • Foreign banking laws (FBAR and FATCA)
  • Citizenship renunciation
  • Impact of the coronavirus pandemic
  • Remote work habits
  • Demographic data (income level, employment type, age, and gender identity)

To qualify as a US expat, individuals need to meet the requirements of either the Physical Presence Test or the Bona Fide Residence Test.

  • Qualifying via the Physical Presence test requires expats to be inside a foreign country for 330 days of any 365-day period.
  • Qualifying via the Bona Fide Residence test requires expats to reside outside the US for at least one full year and have no intentions of returning to the US permanently.
