New Amsterdam Art Space set to launch
After 35 years, the Netherlands Media Art Institute (NIMk) was scheduled to close at the end of 2012 due to major losses of financial support from the Ministry of Culture, yet a solution has been found. The organisers of NIMk and SMART Project Space have joined forces to create an exciting new arts and culture platform, NASA: New Art Space Amsterdam.
Together, the art collectives forming NASA will organise contemporary art and cultural programmes through a mix of visual arts, music, live art and film while also featuring events, symposiums, workshops and exhibitions.
This exciting partnership also aims to hold exhibitions from individual artists as well as featuring a creative work space for artists with the help of public-private cooperation.
NASA will create a multidisciplinary agenda, prioritising the collection and conservation of art and technology. The new organisation also plans to collaborate with academic establishments, specifically the Rietveld Academy and the Sandberg Institute.
Transitions within NIMk will begin in autumn 2012, while New Art Space Amsterdam has a formal start date scheduled for January 2013.
