The history of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition
For composers, the death of a close friend or family member tends to have one of two effects: they either retreat into their own world, devoid of inspiration and unable to compose, or this life experience results in a creative surge forwards. In the case of Mussorgsky, the latter was true.
The Russian composer was good friends with a painter called Viktor Hartmann. Tragically, Hartmann died at the peak of his career, aged just thirty-nine, and the loss of not just a close friend but an artistic inspiration had a deep effect on Mussorgsky.
By way of a tribute to Hartmann, he decided to compose Pictures at an Exhibition, inspired by an exhibition of the artist’s work, which Mussorgsky had visited after his friend’s death. The collection of ten paintings consists of impressions of everyday life and bizarre fantasies from the world of fairy tales and legends.
Rising star Maria Dueñas
The Spanish violinist María Dueñas is praised for the "freedom and playful individuality" of her playing. The Strad magazine described her rising star status as "seemingly unstoppable" after winning a slew of international violin competitions, including her interpretation of Bruch's much-loved Violin Concerto. Dueñas' debut album is released on the prestigious Deutsche Grammophone label in 2023.
Andres Orozco-Estrada conducts The Concertgebouworkest Young (the international youth orchestra of the Concertgebouw Orchestra). They will also play a new work by Dutch composer Carlijn Metselaar and Tchaikovsky's romantic fantasy overture, Romeo and Juliet.
