KINGS… come home: International theatre about moving and belonging
A family has had to leave the motherland and arrives in the West where they hope for safety and happiness. In the middle of a field, the family finds a house. It is warm, safe and nice there. Until the walls begin to move and the house slowly falls apart. They have to move on again. Looking for a new place again...
World-class Black theatre
In a unique fusion of creativity and cultural collaboration three Black organisations join forces to bring this production to life. KIP Republic, The National Black Theater and The Apollo Theater are leading platforms that champion work from their respective communities. Through their collaborations and cross-cultural projects, they aim to share powerful and meaningful stories with a global audience.
Together, they present the new theatre production KINGS...come home. This moving performance touches on both historical and contemporary social issues, and explores the human drive for connection in a world full of commotion and change. KINGS...come home puts a magnifying glass on our past, how it continues to shape us today and relates to the search for healing in the future.
Playing at the Internationaal Theater Amsterdam (ITA) for one night only, this is going to be an unmissable night of English-language theatre.
About KINGS... come home
In KINGS...come home, you are drawn into the compelling story of a family repeatedly forced to leave their home behind. The reasons for their departure, rooted in the traces of our colonial past, are laid out like a labyrinth in the performance. On their journey, they return to the motherland, a journey to the roots, where the whispers of ancestors converge with their descendants, whose souls breathe anew in the language of their origins as they balance between the familiar and the strange.
In this ongoing search for grip and a sense of home, a world unfolds in which the traces of history, power structures, political forces as well as resilience and connection are strongly felt. As they search for an anchor, hidden patterns of desire, love, pain and hope reveal themselves, intertwined with timeless themes of identity and yearning for a home of your own.
