Relocating during 2021: What you need to know
Thinking about moving and not sure where to start? Crown Relocations has put together a list of their frequently asked questions to help ease some of the stress that naturally comes with relocating.
How much time do I need to start the moving process?
We recommend that you start the moving process about two to four months prior to your likely move date. This will give you plenty of time to prepare and to eliminate some of the stress that comes with relocating.
Can I do my own packing?
For international moves, we are in a world of heightened security. Customs officials are far more likely to do an extensive inspection on an owner-packed shipment. The cost of this inspection is often far greater than the cost of packing services. Therefore, our recommendation is for customers to take advantage of a packing service and avoid any unnecessary customs hold-ups.
What is considered a fragile item that would require crating?
If you decide to hire a relocation company, your consultant will discuss crating requirements with you. Items that typically require crating are as follows: large fragile or delicate items, mirrors, glass or marble tabletops, large paintings or pictures and / or high-value items.
My company wants me to move. What if the cost of living is higher in the destination city?
If you are considering a move to a city with a higher cost of living than where you currently live, you want to make sure that your new salary will make up the difference. A great way to compare cities is by using a cost-of-living comparison tool. There are several available online.
How much time do I need before confirming my move with a relocation company?
We recommend confirming your booking as early as possible. With moves postponed in 2020 now ready to take place, we foresee a rather busy moving season in 2021. If you do have a tight deadline, check with your chosen relocations company to see what is possible.
What are crews doing differently due to COVID-19 regulations?
All packing and moving crews should have new protocols in place to protect their customers and staff. New protocols include:
- Following local guidelines around social distancing and sanitation
- Conducting virtual surveys instead of in-home surveys to provide estimates
- Frequently sanitising trucks and equipment
- Practising social distancing with customers and, as much as possible, among moving teams
- Wearing masks and gloves
- Keeping trucks stocked with hand sanitiser
You should be able to find out what each individual company’s protocols are on their website.
