From Monday, August 5, extra speed cameras will be placed by police throughout the Netherlands as part of Europe’s speed marathon. The goal of the week-long traffic observation is to reduce the number of road victims by ensuring safe driving practices are taking place.

Second speed check marathon in the Netherlands this year

In the second speed week of 2024, speed checks will take place across the country from Monday, August 5, until Sunday, August 11. Speeding on Dutch roads during this period could result in a fine or even the confiscation of your driving licence. 

The Netherlands and other countries in Europe have already had a speed week in April this year. During the operation, the Zeeland-West-Brabant unit set up 46 speed checks which saw many traffic fines and the confiscation of 21 driving licences for speeding over 50 kilometres per hour. 

Operation Speed by Roadpol takes place across Europe

Roadpol, a network of European traffic police forces, is the organisation behind the “flash marathon”. Of the 29 countries that are part of Roadpol, including the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium, more than half participate in the speed check campaign. 

According to a spokesperson, of the 25.000 fatal road accidents that occur in Europe each year, most of them are caused by speeding while driving. Previous editions of the speed operation, with over 100.000 fines issued across Europe, proved successful in reducing the number of road victims by 25 percent.
