ÖBB Nightjet prices increase, routes between Netherlands and Austria affected
The Nightjet night train service connecting Amsterdam to Vienna, and stopping at popular weekend destinations such as Cologne, has changed its timetable and increased its prices. Rail bloggers on X (formerly known as Twitter), have expressed their dissatisfaction with the timetable and price changes.
Some routes see price increases of more than 100 percent
Many rail enthusiasts were already unhappy about the changes to the timetable, without adding in the new ticket prices. According to Swiss newspaper Watson, some of the Nightjet services running from Amsterdam to Switzerland have seen meteoric price rises.
For example, the newspaper discovered that transport from Basel to Amsterdam in a single berth compartment for a trip on January 16, 2024 costs 600 euros, whereas before the timetable change, it was still 285 euros, demonstrating a price increase of more than 100 percent.
Bloggers blast ÖBB for lack of transparency
The rail enthusiasts who spotted the changes have criticised ÖBB for not being transparent about their price increases. While the company widely advertised its updated timetable and new train schedules, rail bloggers have criticised it for not being upfront about how the new pricing structure will work.
In defence, the company stated that they have “adapted the pricing system for night traffic” and also explained that this means “there is a wider range of prices”, in a statement on X.
