Dutch government wants to scrap flights between Amsterdam and Brussels
The Dutch House of Representatives wants to put a stop to flights travelling between Amsterdam and Brussels. The reason? Taking the train is often quicker and is definitely better for the environment.
Dutch parliamentary majority
The motion, submitted by GroenLinks, is supported by the majority of parties in the House of Representatives, including the governing parties D66 and the Christian Union. It calls upon the government to make agreements with involved parties about phasing out the flights. Currently, there are multiple flights per day between Amsterdam and Brussels.
Scarcity of flight slots at Schiphol
Another reason for scrapping the flights pointed out by GroenLinks MP Suzanne Kröger is that, besides being environmentally friendlier, available flight slots for landing and taking off are scarce at Schiphol. These flight slots should be used wisely and wherever possible for indispensable flight routes. Flights between Amsterdam and Brussels do not fall under this category.
