In the early hours of the morning on Monday, the fire department was alerted about a blaze raging through a long-term parking lot near Schiphol Airport. Up to 50 cars belonging to people who travelled through the Dutch airport were destroyed before the fire in Rijsenhout was extinguished.

Fire at parking lot near Schiphol destroys up to 50 cars

At 3am on Monday, November 11, emergency services were contacted about a fire at a parking lot in Rijsenhout. The long-stay car park located a few kilometres from the airport in Amsterdam is often used by plane passengers as an alternative to the parking at Schiphol.

According to NOS, the fire was almost extinguished by 6.45am, with only a few electric cars still ablaze. The flames were finally put out by 10am, after 40 to 50 cars had already been destroyed.

Dutch police investigate Rijsenhout car park fire

It is still unclear how the fire started, but there have been reports the blaze included multiple fires in the parking lot. The suspicious circumstances of the fire mean that the police have opened an investigation and closed off the scene.
