Amsterdam in top 25 most visited cities in the world
According to the annual Top 100 City Destinations report by market researcher Euromonitor International, Amsterdam belongs to the 25 most visited cities in the world. The Dutch capital takes 23rd place.
Amsterdam popular travel destination
In 2018, 8,5 million people visited Amsterdam, 8 percent more than in 2017. A visitor is defined as an international tourist who stays in the city for more than 24 hours but not longer than 12 months. Those on a day-trip to the Dutch city are therefore not counted in the visitor number totals.
This year, Amsterdam is 23rd on the global ranking, having moved up four places since 2012. In terms of standing in Europe, Amsterdam comes 7th, behind London, Paris, Istanbul, Rome, Antalya and Prague. In Europe, the top 10 are as follows.

Top global travel destinations
In the Top 100 Destinations 2018, Asian cities reign supreme, with Hong Kong taking the top spot with 29,8 million visitors in 2018 and Bangkok coming in second with 23,7 million visitors. Hong Kong has been the most visited city for years; ever since the ranking begun the Asian city has been in 1st place.
Whilst maintaining its position at 1st place, Hong Kong's visitor numbers have also grown dramatically, increasing 21 percent since 2016. Here are the top 10 most visited cities in the world in 2018.
