Strong showing by Dutch universities in Times World Reputation Rankings
A total of five Dutch universities have made it onto the list of the top 100 universities in the world, based on their reputation among some 17.000 academics from around the globe.
Delft University of Technology has emerged as the top institution in the Netherlands for the second year running, being ranked within places 51-60 on the survey.
Leiden University has fallen within the 61-70 bracket, the University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University are among those ranked 81-90 and Wageningen University and Research Center is in the final range of 91-100.
All five universities have placed in the same brackets as they did in last year's rankings.
American & British dominance
The top 50 institutions on the list are once more dominated by the United States and the United Kingdom, with nine of the top 10 coming from these countries.
There is also a significant gap between the so-called "Anglo-American Sextet" - Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the universities of Cambridge and Oxford, the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University - and the rest of the universities on the list. The gap between these six and those below has widened since the survey was first conducted in 2011.
However, it is worth noting that in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012-2013, which does not base its rankings on the more subjective reputation rankings, had 12 Dutch universities within the top 200, beaten only by the US and the UK.
Methodology
The survey was conducted on an invitation-only basis across a wide range of regions and academic disciplines. A total of 16.639 responses were recorded and each academic invited to take part was selected so that they were statistically representative of both their country and their discipline.
