1-year PostDoc Operations Research

Improved railway timetabling is key to increasing performance and efficiency of railway transport and meeting the European ambitious target to make rail the preferred mode of transport in the future. We offer a postdoc position as part of the EU-Rail project MOTIONAL, concerning the development of an aligned railway timetable planning and traffic management process.
A railway timetable is the backbone of railway operations as it coordinates all train paths over the railway network considering infrastructure limitations. Moreover, the timetable determines largely both the passenger service quality in terms of (generalized) travel time over all origin-destination pairs, as well as the cost efficiency in terms of the required rolling stock needed to operate the timetable. In this project, you will further develop algorithm(s) for strategic railway timetabling optimizing service quality for railway passengers. The goal is to be able to compute high-quality solutions for large-scale instances, such as the Dutch national railway network.
The duration of this project is one year (12 months) and will be executed in close collaboration with Netherlands Railways (NS). In addition, you will work together with other European partners within the MOTIONAL project.
Job description
Your duties and responsibilities include:
- To develop Operations Research models and algorithms to solve strategic timetabling problems.
- To iteratively develop, test and validate the Operations Research models and algorithms above.
- To show the results of these algorithms to railway practitioners in a demonstration.
- To publish the research findings in leading international academic journals.
- To contribute to project deliverables and project meetings of the MOTIONAL project.
- The research is embedded within the Econometric Institute, Erasmus School of Economics, where you will be a member of the Operations Research subgroup. You will be co-supervised by dr. Twan Dollevoet and prof.dr. Dennis Huisman.
Requirements:
- A PhD in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Industrial Engineering or a related field.
- You have skills and experience with quantitative modeling, programming languages (e.g., Java or C++) and optimization tools (e.g., Cplex or Gurobi).
- You are able to work with railway practitioners.
- You have affinity with optimization models in the transportation domain.
- You have affinity with working as a team player and you are proactive in your work, involved actively in your working environment and capable of independently addressing and solving research problems.
- Excellent command of English (C1 CEFR).

The preferred starting date is May 1st 2025, although earlier or later starting dates can be discussed. You will be based at Campus Woudestein at Erasmus School of Economics (ESE). This position is for 1 fte. The salary is dependent on your experience and knowledge and ranges from a minimum of € 4.537 to a maximum of € 6.209 gross per month (scale 11) on a fulltime basis (38 hours), in accordance with the CAO-NU.
