PhD position ‘Probiotic Food Intake Regulation through Satiety and Gut Microbiota Modulation’ within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, NUTRIM (Maastricht University).

The Physiology of Human Nutrition (PHuN) research group within the Department of Nutrition and Movement Sciences (Maastricht University) together with the department of Medical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Infection Prevention is looking for a PhD-candidate (1.0 fte) focusing on the effects of a newly formulated probiotic on food intake, satiety and the modulation of the gut microbiota.

Job Description
A balance in energy intake and expenditure is considered the cornerstone of the prevention of obesity and associated diseases. The successful PhD-candidate will focus on well-controlled human intervention studies involving adults with overweight or obesity to establish relevant relationships along the microbiome-gut-brain axis for food intake regulation. For this, state-of-the-art blood-based parameters, microbiological methodologies, and psychobehavioral assessments are important. Emphasis will be on short- as well as on the longer-term effects of a newly formulated probiotic supplement on microbial composition and satiety related mechanisms.

We offer a challenging research project integrated within an excellent scientific environment that offers facilities to perform state-of-the art multi-disciplinary research, including a unique Metabolic Research Unit (MRUM) and Microbiome Sequencing and Data-analysis Facility. All studies will be performed in a team setting and in collaboration with different experts at the Institute of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism (NUTRIM) in the Netherlands. The PhD candidate will be involved in planning and conducting human intervention studies, analyzing and interpreting the obtained data, and reporting research results.

Requirements

• Master degree in biomedical sciences, medicine, (medical) biology, health sciences, physiology, neurosciences or nutrition
• Experience with human studies and statistical methodology is an advantage
• Experience with data analysis (e.g., using R) is an advantage but not a requirement. We are looking for a candidate who is motivated to develop expertise in handling and interpreting complex (omics) datasets, with training opportunities available
• A real researcher’s mentality: open-minded, curious, creative, enthusiastic, motivated, persevering, and accurate
• Team player with good organizational, communication and social skills, and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment
• Excellent spoken and written English

What we offer
As PhD 'Probiotic Food Intake Regulation through Satiety and Gut Microbiota Modulation' at Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

• Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale P according to UFO profile PhD, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €2901,00 and €3707,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
• An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon a positive evaluation, an extension of 3 years will follow.
• At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.
