Project Overview

Through scientific and engineering research, as well as real-world case studies, you will develop a framework and strategies for the sustainable and long-term adoption of AM in underserved communities, making a tangible impact on global challenges. The development and validation of the framework is expected to be supported by case studies focusing on redesign, realization and validation of 3D printing technologies for underserved countries. The validation will have a strong focus on exploration of the social dynamics in the target communities with the developed technologies and methodologies to ensure sustainable adoption of the printing technology.

Requirements:

  • We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative candidate with a strong interest in 3D Printing, humanitarian engineering and sustainability. The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications and attributes:
  • A Master's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Materials Engineering, or a related field. An additional focus on Additive Manufacturing (AM), sustainability, or social impact would be advantageous.
  • Interest in combining technical and social aspects of engineering, with an understanding of diverse cultural settings.
  • Ability to conduct independent research and to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Creative thinker with analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Willingness to conduct field studies in various underserved communities, potentially including international travel.
  • Hands-on experience including technical modification and optimization of 3D printing technologies, materials science (especially polymers) and humanitarian engineering would be advantageous.
  • Proficient in written and oral English (C1 level minimum)

Salary Benefits:

  • A full-time 4-year PhD position;

  • A gross monthly salary ranging from € 2.872,- (first year) to € 3.670,- (fourth year)
  • A holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3%;
