We are looking for a part-time research assistant to support research activities related to climate change and green transitions in southern Africa.

In this position within the Department of Anthropology you will work with Professor Eileen Moyer and Dr Linda Musariri to support their research activities on climate change and green transitions in the energy and agricultural sectors. You will build up institutional memory and will be able to proactively address things that need to be done or developed, taking responsibility for the tasks that are entrusted to you. As the position is new, you will have the chance to think along in shaping your tasks. You will work at the intersection of administrative, organizational and academic work.

What are you going to do
Your tasks will entail:

  • Providing general assistance (research and administrative)
  • Literature reviews and assistance with manuscript development (with possibilities for co-authoring)
  • Building and updating project and researcher websites, including collecting and editing content
  • Assist in planning meetings and workshops, including:
    • curating, helping decide on format
    • communication with participants and practical support (hotels, travel, handing in receipts, etc.)
  • Coordinating social media activities.


What do you have to offer
The right candidate demonstrates a strong academic foundation through a Master’s degree or equivalent research-related experience and is skilled in managing organizational and research-related tasks effectively. Is proficient in utilizing Microsoft 365 tools to enhance productivity and capable of building and maintaining websites with technical competence. Is experienced in creating and editing podcasts and short films to communicate ideas creatively, while exhibiting exceptional organizational and communication skills to ensure clarity and efficiency. Maintains a proactive and professional approach to work responsibilities, excelling at prioritizing tasks, multitasking, and adapting through improvisation when necessary. Works effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team setting, displaying excellent proficiency in spoken and written English to ensure clear communication.

Knowledge of Dutch and/or Afrikaans would be considered a plus.

What else do we offer you
The position concerns temporary employment of 15 hours per week. The starting date will be as soon as possible, no later than 1 January 2025. Employment is for one year.

This position is based at the Department of Anthropology within the Moving Matters Program Group. Moving Matters stimulates staff members to develop research that push the boundaries of social science.
