Amsterdam University College (AUC) is looking for a Lecturer/Tutor Sciences with a background in Ecology and Conservation Biology, or a related field. The position is initially for one year, which will be extended into a permanent contract after a positive performance assessment.

What are you going to do?
You will be involved in teaching in our Biology track and related fields, depending on your expertise. You will also act as an academic advisor (tutor) in our tutoring programme.

Your tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Teach and develop courses in the Biology track like Urban Ecology Lab, Conservation and Restoration Biology, and Ecology - from Soil to Society
  • Depending on your background you could also teach in related tracks in the Sciences, or in courses in the Academic Core (e.g. Big Questions courses).
  • Be involved in course planning, evaluation, and alignment within the curriculum.
  • Advise your tutees on curriculum planning, study progress, exploration of personal and academic interests, academic and career possibilities after AUC, and matters concerning AUC policies.

What do we require?
We are looking for a new colleague who can bring expertise to our Biology track. A background in the fields of Ecology and/or Conservation Biology is preferred, as well as experience in interdisciplinary applications.

You are a lecturer who:

  • Has a PhD or or at least four years of relevant reseach experience after the MA.
  • Has experience in teaching at university level, preferably with a University Teaching Qualification (BKO or equivalent).
  • Is fluent in English, both written and spoken (C1 level).
  • Is experienced with advising, mentoring, or coaching.
  • Is allowed to work in the Netherlands.

Our offer
A temporary contract for 30.4-38 hours a week, preferably starting on 1-2-2025, for the duration of 12 months. A permanent contract subsequently follows if we assess your performance positive. The UFO profile docent 3 is applicable.

The salary, depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract, will be €4,537 to €6,209 (scale 11) gross per month, based on a fulltime contract (38 hours a week). This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants.

Where you will work
You will be part of the Sciences department at AUC, which offers courses in Information Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Earth and Environment, Biological and Biomedical Sciences, and Health.

Amsterdam University College offers a Liberal Arts and Sciences programme leading to a joint bachelor's degree issued by the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). AUC is a residential college, with students living and studying together on its international campus at Amsterdam Science Park. The programme is taught entirely in English, is small-scale and selective, and admits up to 325 students each year based on their academic performance and motivation.
