Classical music and Cuban rhythms at The Concertgebouw

"One of my favourite orchestras in the world" is what horn player Sarah Willis calls the Havana Lyceum Orchestra from Cuba. Together they play the irresistibly swinging and cheerful programme, Mozart y Mambo, a mix of Mozart's most beautiful music for horn and orchestra and original Cuban music full of exciting rhythms.

Whoever thinks of music for horn will probably not immediately think of traditional Cuban music. Yet Sarah Willis, horn player in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, plays the most attractive Cuban dances on her instrument in Mozart y Mambo, interspersed with Mozart's most beautiful compositions for horn.

These musical spheres couldn’t be further apart, but when worlds collide, greatness can be achieved. The arrangements full of exciting rhythms are by contemporary Cuban composers, creating a wonderful mix of different musical styles.

The Havana Lyceum Orchestra consists of young, talented Cuban classical musicians, supplemented by well-known Cuban musicians from the popular music scene. The CD recording of the first joint project Mozart y Mambo from 2020 was such a success that a follow-up was soon followed with Mozart y Mambo - Cuban Dances. At this concert on August 6, 2023 you can expect to hear the most beautiful pieces from each album.

After the concert, the orchestra will play some more music in the main Entrance Hall of The Concertgebouw. So, join them for an evening of happiness and emotion!
