Don't miss this English language play in Eindhoven

With a confronting and highly relevant performance, the International Theatre Collective Eindhoven, under the inspiring direction of Geert Niland, is returning to theatres. From March 16-23, they will stage five performances at Pand P.

With their previous production The New Continent, entirely in English, they made a significant impression. Twenty local and international talents showcased their worth on stage in a performance that beautifully reflected the polarisation during the coronavirus pandemic.

A story of perpetrators, victims, and bystanders

With a fresh cast, newcomers, and familiar faces, they have taken on Festen, based on a Danish film from 1998. An intense piece that narrates about boundary-crossing behaviour and how society deals with it. A story of perpetrators, victims, and bystanders who don't know what to do and therefore do nothing. A performance that will also challenge the audience to reflect on themselves; How would you react?

This inclusive performance is entirely in English. The starting time is 8pm every day, and tickets are available for 15 euros on the International Theatre Collective Eindhoven website.

In preparation for the performance, an Active Bystander Workshop will be organised on Sunday, March 3, in collaboration with the Eindhoven Library and Fairspace. More information about this can also be found on the website.

About ITCE

International Theatre Collective Eindhoven (ITCE) makes theatre productions for an international audience. The topics of the plays match with current themes that are recognisable for both internationals and locals. The diversity of the international community is seen as a source of wealth for developing their plays. Cast and crew bring their cultural background, their stories and their commitment and thus make a significant contribution to the content, development, and design of their productions. ITCE makes theatre plays in which other disciplines are vital. Movement-theater and (life) world-music are key pilars.

About Festen

Festen (Danish for The Party) is originally a 1998 Danish film, directed by Thomas Vinterberg. David Eldridge’s theatre adaptation had its premiere in London in 2004, and on Broadway in 2006. Helge celebrates his 60th birthday at his former family hotel. His wife Else, son Christian, daughter Helene and a number of acquaintances gather for a big party. Helge’s second son, Michael, is not invited. But he comes with his family anyway. The big absentee is daughter Linda.

Helge asks Christian to give a speech at the dinner because - given recent events - he is feeling too emotional. During dinner, Christian therefore takes the floor. He tells in front of everyone what his father did to him and his sister Linda. Family members and guests are perplexed, fall silent, but decide to follow the party’s agenda. This leads to ever-increasing tension. In the end, no one escapes facing up to things.

Festen is about transgressive behaviour and how a society deals with it. It tells a story of perpetrators, of victims and of the bystanders who don’t know what to do, and therefore do nothing.
